Airing out views on ventilation in schools
Gillian Mackay has welcomed extra funding to improve ventilation in schools and nurseries across Airdrie and Coatbridge to help prevent the spread of Covid.
And now the Scottish Greens MSP is urging North Lanarkshire Council to apply for a share of the cash.
The Scottish Greens have consistently raised the issue of safety in schools and the need to have options in addition to opening windows to maintain safe airflow – especially during the cold winter months.
Extra funding for ventilation systems was proposed by the party, with the Scottish Government now confirming that funding of up to £5m will be available to improve school ventilation systems.
Ms Mackay told the Advertiser: “This extra funding is most welcome, and something the Greens have consistently raised with ministers.
“Teachers and support staff are contacting me regularly with their concerns about the risk of omicron in their classrooms.
“Many need options to improve ventilation beyond opening windows, which is particularly challenging in poorly heated buildings and on cold winter days.
“So, I would now urge North Lanarkshire Council to apply for a share of this funding.
“Scottish Government guidance is clear on the other mitigation measures which may be needed, so I’m glad that is now backed up by extra cash.
“The Scottish Greens will continue to push for a safe environment for children, young people and staff in schools across the country.”
Face-to-face education for Monklands youngsters remains a top priority, as government evidence shows it is the best place to be for children’s education and wellbeing.
Feedback from schools also suggests carbon dioxide monitors can act as a helpful tool to manage ventilation.
