On-form Smith loving it at Airdrie

-

Callum Smith admits he was gutted he didn’t get his first Airdrie hat-trick but says it’s been years since he has enjoyed his football as much as he is now.

The striker netted a double for the second week in a row in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Falkirk and missed out on that treble which has eluded him during two spells with the club.

Smith, whose first stint came in the 2019/20 season, is in fine form with four goals in his last two outings and the former Hamilton and Dunfermline forward says he’s loving life right now with promotion-chasing Airdrie.

They are on a run of 13 games unbeaten in League One as they remain five points behind leaders Cove Rangers.

And he said:“playing for this team is brilliant right now. I’ve been saying to the guys it is the most I’ve enjoyed my football for years.

“We are so attacking, we are scoring goals and we are winning most weeks. It’s a joy to play in.

“But I am gutted I didn’t get the hat-trick. I did want that first Airdrie hat-trick but it’s more about the team performance, and we’ve scored four goals away from home.

“We said in the changing room that it could have been more and it really could.

“We are just so full of confidence and goals come with confidence. The boys are just on such a high right now.”

Smith has taken his tally for the season to 13 and is benefitting from having the likes of Dylan Easton, Scott Agnew and Adam Frizzell around him to tee him up.

He added:“players are making runs and these guys are picking them out. That’s all you can ask for.”
