‘Cairncan’t stopcamby claimingtitle

- PAUL THOMSON

Gartcairn assistant boss Scott Mills congratulated Cambuslang Rangers on wrapping up the West of Scotland Conference B title on Saturday but admits the way the season panned out for his side stings.

The MTC Park side had grand designs on claiming the crown themselves but have had to play second fiddle to Camby for most of the season.

On Saturday Cambuslang sealed the title with a 3-1 win over‘cairn at Somervell Park to leave boss Willie Kinniburgh’s Cairn knowing the best they can finish is second spot.

And No.2 Mills said:“congratulations to Cambuslang Rangers, they deserve the title for their consistency over the season.

“Well done to them and I’m sure they enjoyed their weekend.

“We wanted to win the league ourselves and we are bitterly disappointed that we haven’t.

“Second place, on paper, looks like a decent season but that wasn’t what we aimed for and the management team and players are disappointed.

”It wasn’t the greatest game of football on Saturday.

“It was a war of attrition and Cambuslang were just too good on the day.”

Mills’side could still have work to do to make sure of second spot in the table.

Gartcairn are six points clear of third-place St Cadoc’s and five goals better off, but St Cadoc’s have two games remaining and a game in hand over them.

Cairn play their final match away to Dalry on April 9 and could face a final day wait to secure second spot.

Mills added:“victory in the last game guarantees us second place and we will get into the First Division next year.

“It’s looking like a very good league next year and we’ll start turning our attention to that after the last game with Dalry.

“We want to finish the season off on a positive note. I think it’s always important to win that last game so you go into the summer off the back of a wee victory so you don’t go into it on a negative.

“The second half of the season has been good for us in terms of form and results.

“Our record compared to the first half is night and day and the main positive we can take from this season is that we really kicked on from the turn of the year.

“We’ve played a lot Premier teams in cup competitions. We had a good win over Beth, we pushed Glenafton all the way, Arthurlie knocked us out the Junior Cup.

“We were competitive in all those games.”
