Caring kids back Ukraine Appeal and town foodbank

- IAN BUNTING

Kind-hearted and hard-working kids at a Coatbridge school did their bit to help the people of Ukraine, supported the hungry in their community and engaged with nature at its finest during three terrific activities.

Buchanan High youngsters held a fundraising day in aid of the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) Ukraine Appeal.

Generous pupils and staff managed to collect £370 and were delighted to send the funds on to the critical appeal, which is supporting the millions of people in need of humanitarian aid due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

A Buchanan High spokesperson told the Advertiser: “Raising nearly £400 on the day was magnificent and we wish to thank all of the pupils, staff and their families for their kindness.

“The school was desperate to do what it can to help the people of Ukraine as they are going through a horrible, traumatic time at the moment.

“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the conflict.”

The caring Buchanan High team have also been collecting food donations to distribute to Coatbridge Foodbank.

A plentiful amount of “much needed” items were collated and delivered to help feed people in the town.

The school spokesperson added: “Thank you to all who kindly donated food on behalf of Buchanan High; it was greatly appreciated by the foodbank staff.

“We would like to show our appreciation to Mr Kelly and Mrs Fallon, who organised the collection, and a big thanks also goes to the children for their continued support in making this act of kindness happen.”

Finally, first-year pupils participated in the Clyde

in the Classroom project, which encourages children to “engage with nature and develop a sense of pride in their local environment”.

The talented youngsters were responsible for the care of brown trout within the classroom and worked weekly with Clyde River Foundation scientists.

They then got the chance to release the fish into the water at Airdrie’s Centenary Park.
