Blow for Rovers as skipper Sean moves on

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Albion Rovers have suffered a blow after club captain Sean Fagan joined Lowland League rivals East Kilbride.

Fagan, 23, signed with Rovers back in 2018 and made 151 appearances, scoring six times, but has now chosen to join fifth-tier champions-elect EK for an undisclosed fee.

That deal, however, opened the door for Rovers to bring in 18-year-old defender Ethan Brown on a deal until the end of the season.

And in a boost for the Coatbridge club, goalkeeper Ross Connelly has signed a contract extension until the end of next season.

A statement issued by Rovers on Fagan’s exit read: “The centre-half was made club captain and has helped the team record the best defensive record in the Scottish Lowland Football League.

“We wish Sean all the best in the future, and thank him for his outstanding service to Albion Rovers.”

Interim chairman Bobby Cameron said:“sean has been a brilliant servant to the football club since joining back in 2018, and he has always carried himself as a true professional.

“He has been a fantastic player for us and has grown so much since his debut.

“In his role as captain this season, he has been an integral part of the group.

“He leaves with our best wishes and is without a doubt a player that Rovers supporters will remember as the perfect example of a player you want to attract to your football club.”

Canadian teen Brown was with Orlando City before moving to Scotland and is highly rated within Killie’s youth ranks. Brown has previously been on loan at Cumnock in the West of Scotland Premier League, and captained Kilmarnock’s reserve team.

He joins Aaron Quigg who is also on a loan deal from Rugby Park.

Rovers are delighted to land goalkeeper Connelly on an extended deal, with the 23-year-old having played a key role in their stat as the meanest defence in the Lowland League.

A club statement said:“we’ll now have Ross for another campaign, heading into the summer, and manager Sandy Clark begins to shape his squad for next season.”
