Colts finish in fourth as boss signs up stars

- ANDY MCGILVRAY

Cumbernauld Colts boss David Proctor has already started rebuilding for next season, after finishing fourth in the Lowland League.

A 2-1 win over Gala Fairydean Rovers ended the season on a high for the Broadwood side, with Keelan Adams bagging the winner before heading to Falkirk in the summer.

Proctor hopes for answers from up to six players this week, so he knows where to strengthen for next season.

He said:“we have five players signed for next season and we’re in discussions with a lot of the squad to tie boys up and make sure we’ve got a really good nucleus going into the pre-season training.

“Our captain, Cammy Dickson, Graeme Holmes, Cole Mcintyre, Daniel Hatfield and Billy Mortimer are tied up.

“There are offers on the table for four, five or six of the boys and we’ll be looking for answers over the next week or so.

“Hopefully then we’ll have a better idea of how many we’ve got to work with and where the recruitment drive is focused on in key positions.”

Colts had been second for a large partof the season and on their league finish, Proctor said:“beating Gala at home solidified that fourth position and that’s something, if you had offered it at the start of the season, we’d have bit your hand off for.

“We didn’t want to just settle for that top six, we wanted to keep standards high and the boys did that.

“It was fitting for Keelan Adams to score that winner, because he’s had a tremendous season and earned that move to Falkirk.

“That typifies what we’re doing at Cumbernauld Colts, where boys get opportunities and a platform to prove themselves and earn that move to a higher level.

“It’s really good to finish strongly and it gives us a good platform to build for next season.”

One of the five who have re-signed is Billy Mortimer, who ruptured his ACL in a South Challenge Cup clash against Rutherglen Glencairn in February.

Proctor reckons it will be like a new signing when his striker is back on the pitch.

He said:“billy is undergoing rehab because of his ACL injury but we’re delighted to keep him, make sure he’s looked after and valued, and we’re hoping he’s back certainly at the end of this calendar year.

“We’re in a strong position to then have a player like Billy Mortimer back for the second part of the season.”
