Commuters back charity cycle
GENEROUS passengers boarding trains at Aldershot railway station donated towards a fundraising effort with a Tour de France theme.
South West Trains staff took part in a Ride to Nowhere challenge on a static bicycle on the platform on Saturday from 8.30am and 1pm.
Members of staff took it in turns to climb aboard outside the booking hall to encourage customers to spare some cash for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham.
Paul Orrin, who works in the ticket office, said: “We had a good response from our customers.
“I think the public were pretty generous.
“It’s certainly different and the Tour de France has had a lot of publicity. It makes you sweat when you can’t ride on the roads with the wind in your face.”
The Tour de France started on the same day in Leeds and the event was themed to use the popularity of the sport to promote a good cause.
The final fundraising total was £168.57, and Mr Orrin thanked all those who had donated and said a banner was due to be displayed at the station to show their gratitude.
