A funny thing happened on the way to school
THE secrets of a Roman palace were uncovered by pupils from Church Crookham as they became archaeologists for the day.
Year 4 pupils at St Nicholas’ School experimented with techniques they had been taught in lessons when they visited Fishbourne, in Chichester, West Sussex, to explore the once-magnificent palace that was built in the first century.
The girls took part in an activity workshop where they tiled roofs, wrote in wax, cooked in a Roman kitchen and made mosaics.
They then explored the mosaics and spent time in the sun in the Roman garden looking at the plants the Romans grew. The girls even pretended to be Romans when they lay down to eat in the outside dining area.
“We particularly enjoyed seeing the pomegranate tree as we have been drawing the fruit in art,” said Joanne Carr from St Nicholas’, who organised the visit.
