Motorcyclist killed in crash
Man in his 30s suffered fatal head injuries in accident near roundabout
A MOTORCYCLIST was killed in a crash close to a busy roundabout in Aldershot on Sunday evening.
The motorcyclist, named yesterday by police as 36-year-old Mark Lowson from Maidenhead, was travelling along Wellington Avenue towards the Willems roundabout on his Yamaha bike shortly before 8.20pm when the accident occurred.
Police said that no other motorist was involved in the incident and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two ambulances were sent to the scene, and the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance helicopter landed in the car park of the nearby Tesco supermarket, but paramedics were unable to revive the man.
A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said the man had come off the bike and hit the ground, suffering fatal head and facial injuries.
Hampshire Constabulary officers investigating the cause of the crash would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed it or seen the motorbike being ridden shortly before the accident. It is known that Mr Lowson was riding from Pine Ridge Golf Club in Frimley to an address in Aldershot when the crash happened.
Matt Eason, who lives in Wingate Court opposite Tesco Aldershot, said he did not hear the crash but saw the air ambulance circling overhead.
“We occasionally hear the police helicopter but it kept getting louder so I looked out of the window and saw it descending over Tesco and landing in the car park,” he said.
“It was on the ground for maybe 10 or 15 minutes before it took off again and circled the area.”
Wellwishers posted messages on the Get Hampshire Facebook page expressing their shock and sympathies with the motorcyclist’s family. Sarah Davison wrote: “I saw the bike on the floor and loads of cars stopped and people standing around watching.
“I live in Wingate Court and heard and saw the air ambulance too. So sad. RIP.”
The death follows that of motorcyclist, Filipe Freire, 40, from Farnborough, killed in a collision with a car on the A31 at the Shepherd and Flock roundabout on May 19.
Simone Kennedy posted on Facebook: “RIP. Seem to be a lot of motorcyclists being killed on our roads lately! Think Bike! God bless x.”
Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the roads policing team in Whitchurch on 101.
