‘Loud bang’ as thieves target ATM

-

POLICE in Lightwater are hunting three masked raiders who tried to blow up a cash machine in the village.

Under cover of darkness, the suspects attempted to fleece an ATM at Barclays in The Square at around 2.30am on Saturday.

Surrey Police said that the gang used a tool to blast their way into the machine and access the cash. They then smashed their way into the bank through the front door.

The men, who wore hoods, masks and dark clothing, later made off towards the M3 in what was thought to be a grey Audi TT sports car.

Damage to the ATM shows the various ports staved in, the screen smashed and some of the frontage torn off.

Borough councillor Tim Dodds for Lightwater saw detectives dispatched at the branch and an officer put on duty to guard the scene.

Detective Sergeant Jim Strugnell said: “The explosion would have caused a loud bang, and I am appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of The Square on Saturday morning and saw either the three men or the grey Audi to come forward.

“I am also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the Audi travelling at speed towards the M3.”
