Silver lining for long-serving sisters

-

TWO sisters are celebrating a quarter of a century on the shop floor since they started working for Sainsbury’s, in Farnham.

Sue Hudson and Sherrie McCaul started work at the South Street supermarket in July 1989, and this week were congratulated for their loyal service by Peter Smith, manager of the Water Lane store where they now employed.

The pair, who grew up in Upper Hale, began as checkout operators at the start of a career which has seen Ms Hudson, 57, end up on the customer service desk and Ms McCaul, 53, undertaking stints at the flower stall and health and beauty counter.

When both women began having a family they were allowed to job-share, meaning they could guarantee one adult was always at home.

Both now live with their own families in Aldershot.

“Quite a lot has changed in 25 years,” said Ms Hudson.

“There is a lot more home shopping these days, but it’s a good team here and loads of our family have worked here on and off over the years.

“You have to be very diplomatic on the customer service desk,” she added.

“But there are no jobs where you don’t need to come into work with a big smile on your face.”

Ms Hudson added she expected to continue working for Sainsbury’s until she retired.
