Carnival enjoys a legendary parade
Procession is full of fun and colour as floats are filled with children and adults embracing myths and legends theme
THOUSANDS of people lined the streets of Surrey Heath for the 38th annual Frimley Green Carnival.
Upwards of 3,000 supporters cheered on a myriad of weird and wonderful floats as they wound their way through Frimley and into Frimley Green on Sunday.
Setting off from Balmoral Drive shortly before noon, the procession made its way up Paddock Hill, along Frimley Green Road to The Green, before turning into Wharf Drive and eventually arriving at Country Club.
The Mayor of Surrey Heath, Cllr Bob Paton made his second appearance on behalf of the mayor’s office in two years having stood in last year for the former mayor, Beverley Harding.
After judging entries in the procession, it was up to Cllr Paton to lead the merry snake through the villages.
Organiser Tony Moore explained that the carnival’s nine-person committee had decided this year’s theme should be myths and legends. He said he was ‘delighted’ by the imagination of the
the
Lakeside handful of schools, Scout groups and youth clubs who invested weeks of work into their costumes and floats.
The award for the best under-fives’ float went to Fun Time Pre-School; best under-12s’ to Cross Farm Infant School; best club to Liberty Gymnastics; and best individual to the KatCanDo cancer charity.
Following the procession, carnival-goers convened at The Green for the traditional fair, which began with Aldershot Town FC’s cheerleaders, the Hot Shots, making their debut appearance.
This was followed by the investiture of the carnival princesses Daisy Camp, seven, Bethany Dean, nine, and Maddie Williams, seven. The girls joined the procession in a classic open-top car.
Four hours of arena entertainment on The Green featured singing and dance performances by the Lorraine Day Dance School, Camberley Stagecoach, Aspects of Dance, Redz Performing Academy and Phoenix.
Sporting and gymnastic displays were held by Liberty Gymnastics Club, Camberley Martial Arts, Sport4Kids and the Beaver Scouts of the 1st Frimley Green and Mytchett Scout Group. All money raised will be re-distributed to local causes and charities following the carnival committee’s AGM in November.
Mr Moore added: “It was a brilliant year. It was great to have the Hot Shots for the first time, as well as martial arts – there was definitely more sports representation this year.
“It’s always a busy day for us but there were no hitches, we’ve got it down to a fine art these days, thankfully.
“The theme went down well too.
“It’s better to give everyone an idea and let them run with it – and they did.”
