Danny gets the call-up

-

JUDO star Danny Williams has been handed a late call-up up to the England Judo team for the Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old, who trains full-time at Camberley Judo Club, has been drafted in as a late replacement for club mate Ben Fletcher and is looking forward to competing at his first Commonwealth Games having been part of Team GB at the Olympic Games in 2012. He will compete in the U73kg category tomorrow (Friday).

Student Williams, who also coaches youngsters at the Camberley club, said: “I found out about a week ago that there was a good chance I would be in the squad, but I only knew for definite on Saturday.

“Everyone else has gone through a good few months of preparation for this, but I’m always confident and I feel ready to fight.

“I’ve never competed at the Commonwealth Games before so it will be something new, but the experience of a multi-sport event at the Olympics two years ago will help.”

Londoner Williams will be looking to continue the Camberley club’s proud tradition at major events, led in recent years by Olympic bronze medallist Karina Bryant, for whom he trained alongside.
