Numbers game has its benefits

-

A DOZEN local community groups have received grants of up to £1,000 thanks to Rushmoor Borough Council’s online lottery.

Among those benefiting from the grants is Aldershot Cricket Club, which will be using the money to install a new scoreboard, and Bevan Lodge Community Pre-School in Farnborough, which will be installing an eco-treehouse climbing frame for pupils to enjoy.

Parkside (Aldershot and District Learning Disability) will be using its grant to run a gardening project for children and adults with special needs, while a grant will also help Southwood Infant School to refurbish its library.

Rushmoor Community Lottery has so far raised more than £94,000 for good causes across Aldershot and Farnborough since it was launched in 2017.

A weekly ticket costs £1, with half of the money going straight to a local good cause, chosen by the player, and a further 10p to the Rushmoor Community Fund.

It is the fund that allows the lottery to offer grants of up to £1,000 to the participating good causes.

To be considered for a grant, organisations need to be part of the Rushmoor Community Lottery and have sold tickets. The project or initiative they apply for must be beneficial for residents of Aldershot and Farnborough and a forum made up of representatives from local community organisations and the borough council decide how the money is awarded.

Cllr Adrian Newell, cabinet member for democracy, strategy and partnerships, said: “It’s wonderful to see the money benefiting local causes at a time when funds are needed more than ever.

“Every ticket sold makes a difference. We can’t wait to see the completed projects making a difference in our communities.

“The Rushmoor Community Lottery continues to go from strength to strength, with 114 local good causes currently involved.

“The lottery is proving invaluable for the causes during these uncertain times when fundraising is proving incredibly difficult.”
