Donation provides energy to people suffering fuel poverty
A CITIZENS Advice Bureau in Camberley has received a £2,000 donation from Woking Lions Club to support people struggling to pay their gas or electricity bills.
Woking Lions Club president Paul Robinson and the chairman of community welfare, Roger Chamberlain, presented a cheque to Kate Sawdy, chief executive officer of Citizens Advice Surrey Heath.
The scheme, known as Project Wenceslas, was set up by Woking Lions Club to collect money from people who are awarded the government’s winter fuel allowance but who choose to donate it to those in fuel poverty.
Mr Chamberlain said: “The money comes in from those who feel they don’t need it, and we then give it back out to help those who do need it.
“It helps people who are in desperate need and can’t afford to pay gas and electricity bills.
“I am convinced there are people struggling and having difficulties in Camberley, Aldershot, Surrey Heath and throughout the country.”
With the pandemic still affecting many people, the Lions Club is looking to help as many as possible who find they are unable to pay their electricity and gas bills this winter. Residents in Bisley, West End and Chobham will benefit from funds that have been kindly donated.
For residents in Surrey Heath, support through the scheme is administered via Citizens Advice Surrey Heath to people who make an application and meet certain criteria. Citizens Advice Surrey Heath can also help find a cheaper energy supplier to those willing to share a few details about their current energy provider and tariff.
