BLACKMOOR Golf Club have raised more than £19,000 for the UK Sepsis Trust and Hampshire Alzheimer & Dementia Society via their captain’s charities.

The donations, which were raised by members of the golf club over the past 18 months, were presented to representatives from both charities on Saturday, October 16, during the annual captain’s drive-in.

The 2021 club captain’s charity, UK Sepsis Trust, was awarded the sum of £8,847 presented to volunteer Pete Gill by the club immediate past captain Dennis Pym.

CAMBERLEY claimed five points and notched six tries in their 41-11 win over London Cornish.

With Camberley starting proceedings, the Black and Ambers soon won a lineout just inside the Cornish 22 and a great lineout drive set up a good attacking position deep in the red zone.

With just five minutes on the clock Josh Wright claimed the first touch down and with Matt Smart adding the extras, Camberley were on the board.

From the Cornish restart Camberley soon moved back into the red zone courtesy of a couple of penalties and a high tackle in front of the posts saw Smart take the three points on ten minutes.

The restart was again dealt with by the visiting side but from the ensuing lineout Cornish managed to string some phases together and when they won a penalty on the Camberley 22, they kicked over the

Andy Kendall, from the

Hampshire Alzheimer & Dementia Society, accepted a cheque for £10,191 by the women’s immediate past captain Frances Hudson, bringing the total charitable donation to £19,038.

In a letter from the UK Sepsis Trust, chief executive Ron Daniels thanked Blackmoor for the donation that would go directly towards raising public awareness, educating health professionals and supporting those affected by sepsis.

Each year the Blackmoor captains choose a charity to support at the beginning of their posts to reduce their deficit to seven points.

Camberley’s response was almost immediate when, after a clever grubber kick by Smart, Cornish had to take one of the new goal-line drop-outs, which was collected well by George Owen who took the ball back into the red zone and quick ball saw Harry Faulkner cross for an unconverted try. tenure, and fundraising events and activities are held throughout the year to encourage contributions from club members.

In 2020 Covid-19 restrictions meant many of the planned activities needed to be postponed, so the club decided to extend the captaincies for a further year.

Hudson said: “Proceeds have been raised by holding plenty of fundraising events and activities which encourage donations from our members.

“These included charity coffee mornings, captain’s raffles, fun golf days, cake baking as well as

The restart this time saw great drives by Connor Diplock but the resulting kick for touch was too strong, so the advantage was lost. This signalled a period of scrappy play by Camberley which eventually saw Cornish add another penalty to their score on 33 minutes.

The Camberley restart was not cleared well by Cornish and a couple of penalties saw a lineout near the individual donations from members.

“I’m extremely grateful to everyone for their support and generosity during my captaincy.”

Kendall added: “Like all charities, our income has taken a huge blow due to the pandemic, while demand for our vital dementia support services has sky-rocketed.

“Without the generosity of supporters like the members of Blackmoor Golf Club we simply cannot keep up.

“Their donation will make a big difference to lives of people

Cornish line. Despite good defence from the home side, Shawa Rai eventually broke through and although he was tackled just short, the ball was quickly recycled and Josh Wright dotted down under the posts.

Cornish then provided a glimpse of what they were capable of when, from a lineout in the Camberley 22, a great flip pass by their centre gave his winger just enough space to cross in the corner on the stroke of half-time for a 22-11 scoreline.

Again, as with time in the first half Camberley engineered themselves into good attacking positions but a sloppy last pass meant that they did not add to their score until the 56th minute.

This did arrive via an exciting burst by Greg Franzel deep into the red zone, the ball found its was way into the hands of Dom Sammut and he crashed over for a well taken score and with that the try bonus point that the visitors were desperate to achieve.

The Camberley pack became very affected by dementia and their families who have never needed us more.”

Following the AGM the previous evening, the captain’s drive-in ceremony welcomed the newlyelected club officers.

The 2022 club captain Kevin Quinn drove off the first tee with a 216-yard drive, a distance correctly guessed by Elspeth Dixon in the drive-in sweep which raised money for Myeloma UK, the newly appointed club charity.

He was preceded by Nigel Barrow, the new seniors’ captain, and Vi Ricketts, women’s captain. dominant after several changes were made, and another period of intense pressure close to the Cornish line eventually saw the award of a penalty try and ten minutes in the sin bin for the Cornish flanker who was their stand-out player for the majority of the game.

Despite their best efforts the home side were not really able to make an impression on the Camberley defence.

Then some fine breaks by Tom Chennell and Chris Bird took play again deep into the Cornish red zone and another good lineout catch and drive saw Franzel claim the score, proving yet again that he is lethal from close range, providing Camberley’s sixth try of the afternoon.

No further score was made, with a slightly better performance in the second half by Camberley when they managed to keep Cornish scoreless in the second 40 minutes, which included a very promising debut by Ryan Eastley who at just 19, looked at home in the front row.
