In-form Camberley tame Wild Geese in 13-try demolition

-

CAMBERLEY crushed London Irish Wild Geese on Saturday, scoring 13 tries in an 89-0 London One South mauling.

Camberley were soon in the Irish half and, from a lineout, a great driving maul saw the Black & Ambers pack make 15 metres before Greg Franzel charged at least 20 metres for the touchdown with just three minutes on the clock and with Matt Smart adding the extras.

Four minutes later, Matt Smart, Jos Lewanituva, Jaid Wiltshire and Harry Faulkner produced a wonderful handling move before George Owen crossed, and with Smart doing the honours again the score was 14-0.

The restart saw Irish with a few phases of possession but they found the Camberley defence much to good and eventually were forced to kick the ball away.

Camberley were penalised following a good lineout drive but they quickly regained possession and Dom Sammut cantered over for a try on 20 minutes with Faulkner adding the extras.

Irish, to their credit, did apply some pressure over the next 10 minutes when several penalties on the Camberley 22 were kicked into the corner.

A great break by prop Nick Barry fed Sammut for the lock to score his second of the afternoon and the bonus point for 28-0.

The Black & Ambers were not finished for the half and Sammut stole another Irish lineout before Lewanituva and Oyoni Gbla made good yards into the Irish 22 and again, from the eventual lineout drive, Ben Lovell-Smith emerged from the pile of bodies to claim the score and another great touchline kick by Faulkner made it 35-0 at the break.

The start to the second half was even more explosive than the first when great hands by John Murphy saw Owen on his way with just one minute played, and with Faulkner again adding the extras the score moved to 42-0.

The restart again saw Camberley run the ball out of their 22 with Lewanituva and Wiltshire taking the ball into the Irish 22, and although skipper Tom Chennell was brought down when a try seemed certain, the ball was recycled and a couple of patient phases later a great cut out pass by Smart to Owen saw the winger cross for his third of the match.

It was all getting pretty frustrating for the hosts at this stage as a good break by Barry saw the centre pop the ball to Faulkner for the young 15 to claim the score, which he then converted.

In the final stages Barry eventually claimed a reward for his efforts in the front row when he was driven over from a lineout.

An ‘attack from anywhere’ attitude saw Camberley win the Irish throw 10 metres from the Cam line and, swinging the ball wide, the backs moved into the Irish half and again Owen fed Chennell, and when the skipper was tackled it was Owen who was first to the breakdown to recycle the ball and eventually Gbla dabbed down on the far side.

The final action was a try by Wiltshire and another magnificent touchline conversion by Faulkner.

Camberley are next in action on Saturday November 27 when they host KCS Old Boys.
