Shots show their fighting spirit to break winless run

- By ELLIOTT JACKSON

ALDERSHOT Town boss Mark Molesley described his side’s win over Grimsby Town as a ‘special moment’ after finally ending a run of seven games without a point at home.

The Mariners were beaten 2-1 at The EBB Stadium, ending Aldershot’s horrific run of form in front of their own supporters. Tommy Willard handed the Shots the ideal start by firing home from close range after 12 minutes, only for Harry Clifton to head Grimsby level just three minutes later.

Alfy Whittingham then pounced on the hour mark to put the home side back in front and inflict Grimsby’s fourth straight loss in all competitions.

The Shots, by contrast, claimed their first win in seven matches in all competitions, ending a losing streak dating all the way back to early October.

It was an emotional moment as the full-time whistle blew, with Aldershot, a military town, honouring Remembrance Sunday with a fitting performance and result, according to their boss.

“It was a really special moment, a big moment for our football club,” Molesley told ShotsTV.

“We knew it would be a special weekend with the Remembrance service and it was important that we showed the characteristics that people want to see, especially on a day like today.

“We had to be willing to suffer, fight and scrap for everything we got. It was a proper Aldershot performance when the chips are down and things are against you.

“I’m so proud of the boys today, with how the game went. We got pegged back so quickly after getting in front. We had to show that fighting spirit, the attitude and then we get to celebrate and enjoy what we did today.

“When you play a team with the quality of Grimsby, you need every member of your team from your goalkeeper to your strikers and the crowd behind you.”
