BRAMSHOT FARM COUNTRY PARK WALK WEAVES THROUGH PONDS

WITH the warm weather expected to continue this month, it is the perfect time to explore some of the stunning walks that Hampshire has to offer.

One of those is a wonderful wetland walk – but don’t worry, you will not get your feet dirty.

A wetland walk opened at Bramshot Farm Country Park last year following extensive work to create a wetland habitat for wildlife.

The dog-friendly spot in Fleet is located in the north-eastern part of the county and is a lovely place to visit.

Consisting of 91 acres of open meadows and woodlands, surfaced and unsurfaced pathways weave throughout the beautiful park to cater for all abilities and interests. It is perfect for dog walking, a family day out, and other outdoor pursuits.

The walk, formally known as Old Oak Way, has seen a number of accessibility improvements, including raising the path to prevent flooding, with grass and viewing platforms on one side and gravel on the other. At 1.2km in length, it is perfect for anyone looking for a free day out.

Councillors David Neighbour and Simon Ambler, of Hart District Council, officially cut the ribbon in July last year and were the first to stroll along the pathway and enjoy the purpose-built viewing decks.

The district council’s countryside services have created a series of new ponds which control the flow and retention of water, and make an ideal habitat for amphibians and reptiles. It is hoped these works will attract the protected great-crested newt back to the area.

The waterbodies will also be attractive to species of dragonfly and damselfly and a variety of waterfowl and wading birds.

The existing pathways have been upgraded for year-round access and educational boards will let visitors know about the wildlife in the area.

Cllr Ambler said: “This area now provides a unique and engaging countryside experience for visitors with the new wetlands adding further biodiversity to this wonderful amenity.”

Cllr Neighbour added: “With summer upon us, this is a great time to visit Hart’s green spaces.

“We have some excellent natural habitats to enjoy, including heathlands, woodlands, meadows, marshes and Hampshire’s largest freshwater lake at Fleet Pond.”

Carved benches are dotted along the route at regular intervals so visitors can take a seat and enjoy the scenery.

Mown pathways extend a further kilometre into the country park, offering the opportunity to explore the site further and exercise energetic pets.

Visitors can begin their walk along the surfaced pathway ‘Leaping Hare Loop’ from the car park.

An additional pedestrian entrance is located off Juniper Road via the A327 underpass connecting walkers with ‘Yaffle Meadows.’
