A MOTORIST who failed to stop for police reached speeds of more than 90mph in Farnham town centre. Surrey Police said the vehicle came to officers’ attention on Castle Street.

Officers activated their blue lights but the driver did not stop. They then reportedly ‘cut up’ a member of the public as they drifted around a corner before driving at 92mph in a 30 zone.

The driver then passed through a red light at a busy junction on the wrong side of the road. Officers later attended their home after the car failed to stop.

The driver was taken to court and charged with failing to stop for police and dangerous driving. They pleaded guilty and were banned from the roads for 16 months.

The motorist will have to take an extended test before they can get behind the wheel again. They were also ordered to complete a community order, rehabilitation activity, 200 hours of unpaid work and fined £199.

Surrey Roadsafe shared details of the incident on Facebook. The driver’s name has not been given.

It said: “29th July 23, Vanguard Road Safety Team & divisional officers witnessed a vehicle ‘drift’ out of Castle Street in Farnham. Officers activated their blue lights with the intention of stopping the driver, but the driver didn’t stop.

“Instead they ‘cut up’ a member of the public as they drifted around a corner before reaching speeds of 92mph in a 30 limit and then travelling through a red light at a busy junction on the wrong side of the road.

“As the driver didn’t stop, officers attended the registered keeper’s home address where the driver identified themselves. The driver was taken to court for Fail to Stop & Dangerous Drive, where guilty pleas were entered.”

One commenter called the sentence “crazy” and called for more lifetime bans for dangerous driving. But the Surrey Roadsafe team responded: “As the sentence was dangerous driving, they will also have a criminal record.”
