Industrial fire leads to warning for residents

-

PEOPLE in Ash Vale were instructed to keep their windows and doors closed as the emergency services dealt with an ‘industrial building fire’ last Wednesday.

The blaze in Lysons Avenue saw the road shut and people were asked to avoid the area as Surrey Fire and Rescue Service used five pumps and an aerial ladder on a platform to deal with the flames.

One eyewitness told SurreyLive: “We were all evacuated at 5.30pm by the fire services and police have since closed off the road.

“We have been told it’s a battery storage facility that is next to us, so explains the amount of pops and bangs that happened while it was burning.

“At the moment the area is closed due to the chemicals that have been released into the air from the burnt lithium-ion batteries.”

These claims were not confirmed at the time, but a Surrey Police Facebook post, said last Wednesday: Police officers and fire crews are in attendance at an industrial building fire on Lysons Avenue in Ash Vale this evening (January 31).

“Surrey Fire and Rescue is asking people to avoid the area, and residents nearby should close windows and doors.

“There is a road closure in place in Lysons Avenue, in both directions, and this is expected to remain in place for up to 48 hours”.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service confirmed on Thursday at just after 4pm, almost 24 hours after initial calls were made, that “the situation is under control and we’re now scaling back our response.

“Thank you for your patience while we’ve been dealing with the incident”.
