Robber with machete left bookies with just £79.30

-

A FARNBOROUGH man has been jailed for four years after stealing £79.30 from a betting shop in the town while armed with a machete.

Daniel Ashok Calisse, 40, of Peel Court, entered the Coral shop in Camp Road at around 8.45pm on August 8.

Calisse approached the counter and asked about getting a job at the store. He then brandished a machete and demanded money from the till, leaving the premises with £79.30.

The police arrested Calisse in Farnborough at around 9.40pm and later located the machete that was used in the robbery. Calisse pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Winchester Crown Court heard that days before the Coral incident, Calisse had entered the Betfred shop in Peabody Road, Farnborough, on July 27 and stole £30 from the till. He later pleaded guilty to burglary other than dwelling.

Calisse was jailed for 44 months for the Coral robbery and four months for the Betfred burglary when he appeared in court last Wednesday. Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Sol Koranteng said: “This was a terrifying incident for the victim, who should have been able to feel safe at his place of work.

“Calisse was armed with a large machete and his actions that night were reckless and incredibly dangerous. Robbery is a serious offence and we know the impact it can have. Calisse left that shop with just £79.30, but his actions will have a long-lasting effect on the victim.

“I would like to thank the victim for his support and hope he is able to move forward with his life knowing that Calisse is behind bars. I hope this result highlights that we take all reports of knife incidents seriously and that our officers will not stop until those responsible face justice.”
