Delighted Day buzzing as brilliant Boro beat Bath
IT was a successful week for Farnborough who crept over the 50-point mark in the table, after recording back-toback wins in the National League South.
Aaron Kuhl’s first-half strike was enough to see off Welling United at the Saunders Transport Community Stadium during the week.
Boro then headed to Somerset to take on seventh-placed Bath City.
The deadlock was broken on 22 minutes as Farnborough defender Edon Pruti scored his first goal for the club; a looping header into the net after the hosts failed to clear from a Guy Hollis long throw.
The Yellows lost striker Hisham Kasimu to injury at the break, with Luton Town loanee Millar MatthewsLewis sent on to lead the line.
On 55 minutes, Boro doubled their advantage with a swift counter attack.
Ricky Holmes broke down the left wing and slid a low ball across the box for Millar Matthews-Lewis to strike home at the second time of asking.
In front of 1,284 spectators at Twerton Park, Farnborough ensured they returned to Hampshire with all three points and another clean sheet to match.
Boro boss Spencer Day said: “I think it was our most comprehensive away performance, against a team that’s been in the play-offs all season.
“I thought we thoroughly deserved the win. I think my only disappointment was we weren’t two or three up by half-time.
“Their goalkeeper has made three fantastic saves. You’ve got balls bouncing around the box and we’re getting long throws and corners in, because we were the better side.
“We’re creating pressure and then we’ve got a weapon to follow that up.
“We’re a fantastic goal up and we forced the home side to make a double change at half-time, because they’ve got such a quality bench with some fabulous forwards to come on. I thought at the start of the second half, even though they didn’t create anything, they got that little bounce – but what a goal.
“Goals change games and 10 minutes into the second half, a fantastic counter attacking goal. A brilliant ball from Aaron [Kuhl], fabulous cross from Ricky [Holmes] and Millar [Matthews-Lewis] is there. The keeper actually makes a great save again and you think ‘I can’t believe he’s saved that,’ but we get the rebound in.
“So, two-nil up and then we just managed it. Jack [Turner, Farnborough goalkeeper] hasn’t had a save to make and their goalkeeper [Josey Casa Grande] is probably their man of the match. That tells you what a performance it was. I thought it was a fantastic shift.
“I thought in the first five minutes, we looked a little bit tired quite frankly. It’s a long, long journey when you’re sitting in the cars, but what a performance.
“We controlled the game and let’s not forget for a second, Bath are a really strong side and to do that on their patch is a fantastic result for us.”
Farnborough were due to face Worthing on Tuesday evening and then host play-off chasing Aveley on Saturday.
