Sensitive restoration for Victorian chapels
RESTORATION work has been completed on two Victorian chapels at Redan Road Cemetery, in Aldershot.
Rushmoor Borough Council carried out the project in preparation for the refurbishment of Aldershot Crematorium later this summer.
The borough council said the chapels have been restored so one can be used for services and the other as a waiting room and office.
It added that the updated chapel has ‘similar facilities’ to those at the main crematorium and can accommodate up to 60 people, while 30 more can watch services on a screen in the next door waiting room.
The 64-year-old Aldershot Crematorium was last fully refurbished 25 years ago.
According to Rushmoor, works planned to take place later this year include “the installation of a new roof, a second ‘cremator,’ an extension to the covered entrance, and improved access and facilities for people with disabilities”. New windows, improved insulation and solar panels will also be fitted.
The council added although the crematorium building will be closed to the public throughout the period of restoration works, the grounds will remain open to visitors throughout.
I think all men, it’s just a positive step forward. “It’s noticeable that there is a small ongoing cost to this that we think it’s worth it, even though we’re in tight times financially.” The initiative aims to raise prostate cancer awareness and allow men to dispose of sanitary waste with dignity. In support of the same campaign, Portsmouth City Council also recently agreed to provide sanitary bins in its men’s toilets.
