Town stretch unbeaten run with win over Spelthorne

-

FLEET Town stretched their unbeaten run to five games by beating Spelthorne Sports 4-1 away on Saturday in the Combined Counties League Premier South.

Spelthorne went into the game looking to rebuild their season after the league had imposed an eight-point deduction on them, which had dropped them into the bottom four.

Despite their early pressure, it took Fleet 28 minutes to break the deadlock, when Mihail Marinescu brought the ball down the right flank and then cut into the box.

Calmly assessing his options, he took a shot himself and smashed the ball just inside the near post to give Fleet Town the lead. Only five minutes late Spelthorne were level when Daniel Watts scored for the home side and the game stayed at 1-1 until half-time.

Fleet regained the lead in the first minute of the second half when Argjend Ahmetaj played a pinpoint ball into the box in the perfect position for Dan Bone to turn it into the net.

More chances came and went for Fleet to extend their advantage, which eventually came in unusual style, when the ball went wide for a goal kick to Spelthorne on 68 minute.

Keeper Bob Honey kicked the ball low upfield and managed to hit Marinescu on the back - the ball rebounded wide of Honey and despite desperate attempt to reach the ball by home defender Oliver Davison, it went over the line.

Fleet brought on more fresh legs the bench to consolidate and hold on to the winning scoreline.

And they scored a further goal after 86 minutes when Bradley Pegg brought the ball out of defence and seeing the home keeper out of the goal hit the ball into the box from halfway and watched as it looped over Honey into the net to make the score 4-1.

The busy end to the season continues with more rain last week, causing the game at Tadley postponed again last Thursday.

That fixture still needs to be rearranged, and many sides are now facing two or three games every week, providing the wet weather ever dries up.

After the Farnham away game on Tuesday April 9, Fleet now have an extra fixture added on Thursday, April 11, a home game against Westfield in the semi-final of the Aldershot Senior Cup at the Mustard Seed Stadium (7.45pm) before the away league match on Saturday, April 13 in Cobham against Epsom and Ewell.
