After the death of King Alexander III of Scotland, the country found itself in the middle of a succession crisis. As a respected European monarch, Edward was called to adjudicate a dispute but instead tried to exert his control over the Scottish crown and bring it under his domain, leading to the Scottish Wars of Independen­ce and helping to foster an intense rivalry along the border.
