A popular tale regarding the origins of the Christmas tree features one of the most controversial men in European history. Apparently Martin Luther, the German Protestant reformer, was the first to think of decorating a tree for Christmas. Supposedly, Luther was walking home one evening when he looked up at the night sky and was amazed by its beauty. Surrounded by evergreen trees, he became inspired and hoped to recreate the scene for his family. He brought a tree into the house and proceeded to decorate it with lit candles.
