Champion of the world

Louis defeated the reigning heavyweight champion James J Braddock with a knockout in the eighth round. There were political connotations, as the match had been set up to stop Schmeling from regaining the title and allowing it to fall into the hands of Nazi Germany. It was a much-needed boost for the American after his defeat at the hands of his German opponent in the previous year.
