Enter stage left

Just as in modern theatre, actors would often enter or exit a scene by walking offstage. However, the side of the stage the actor chose to come on or off had greater significance in Greek theatre. If you entered from the spectator’s right, it meant the character was coming from the city; if they entered from the left, they were coming from the countryside.
