As the character of Zanni was a clownish servant, he dressed in the loose rough linen associated with Bergmasque peasants. His broad cap may also have been directly copied from urban chimneysweeps and his trousers borrowed from Venetian sailors. The commedia would also send up the upper classes: La Signoria would be overdressed, with colourful makeup, excessive ruffles and too many jewels.
