Charles V, the ruler of Spain and the Holy Roman Empire, had an early multi-shot, wheel-lock pistol around 1540. This was the first self-igniting firearm and it used a serrated, springloaded, rotating steel wheel to provide ignition. Once wound and released, it would spin against a piece of pyrite, generating sparks.
