While people had enjoyed watching silent open-air movies before, it took an auto-parts salesman, Richard hollingshe­ad, to realise that americans would enjoy watching them in the comfort of their cars. hollingshe­ad opened the first drive-in in 1933 but it didn’t really take off until the advent of in-car speakers in the 1940s. at its peak in 1958, there were 4,063 drive-ins in the us and there are still

324 operating today.
