Uluç started his piracy career as a galley slave, captured by the Barbary pirates of Hayreddin Barbarossa. He converted to Islam and joined Dragut’s fleet, taking part in a number of naval battles. Present at the Siege of Malta, Uluç succeeded Dragut as the governor of Tripoli after the latter’s death and proved to be a capable commander. He became governor of Algiers in 1568 and three years later he was named the Grand Admiral of the Ottoman fleet.
