Uluç started his piracy ca­reer as a gal­ley slave, cap­tured by the Barbary pi­rates of Hayred­din Bar­barossa. He con­verted to Is­lam and joined Dragut’s fleet, tak­ing part in a number of naval bat­tles. Present at the Siege of Malta, Uluç suc­ceeded Dragut as the gov­er­nor of Tripoli af­ter the lat­ter’s death and proved to be a ca­pa­ble com­man­der. He be­came gov­er­nor of Algiers in 1568 and three years later he was named the Grand Ad­mi­ral of the Ot­toman fleet.
