Seeing their infantry was about to buckle, Wellington’s First and Second Brigades of heavy cavalry charged and smashed into the French infantry. By the time they reached the bottom of the hill, they had completely halted the infantry’s advance. In doing so, however, they had left themselves exposed and without backup.
