One of the first cities to have a sem­blance of street light­ing, huge metal lamps fu­elled by palm oil (one of the em­pire’s great­est ex­ports) were placed all around the city, though espe­cially near the royal res­i­dence, to il­lu­mi­nate traf­fic.
