1. A formal beginning

Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg were both still teenagers when they fell for one another during the Spanish king’s state visit to England in 1905. Alfonso was on the hunt for a bride and Ena’s cousin, Princess Patricia of Connaught, was lined up as a potential queen. But Alfonso was charmed by Ena during a formal dinner and she turned out to be just as smitten.
