Al­fonso XIII and Vic­to­ria Eu­ge­nie of Bat­ten­berg were both still teenagers when they fell for one an­other dur­ing the Span­ish king’s state visit to Eng­land in 1905. Al­fonso was on the hunt for a bride and Ena’s cousin, Princess Pa­tri­cia of Con­naught, was lined up as a po­ten­tial queen. But Al­fonso was charmed by Ena dur­ing a for­mal din­ner and she turned out to be just as smit­ten.
