French in­ven­tor Nicéphore Niépce pro­duced the first suc­cess­ful land­scape pic­ture us­ing a cam­era ob­scura filled with a pewter plate. He snapped a view of the court­yard of his coun­try es­tate, Le Gras, but the ex­po­sure took a stag­ger­ing eight hours, so the sun seems to ap­pear on both sides of the build­ing.
