Not to be mis­taken for a bul­let­proof vest, a flak jacket of­fered mul­ti­ple lay­ers of ny­lon that might shield you from shrap­nel but couldn’t stop a bul­let. Rather flak jack­ets with lots of pock­ets served as a util­ity vest, al­low­ing war cor­re­spon­dents to keep es­sen­tials – rolls of film, lens-clean­ing cloth, press passes, cig­a­rettes – within easy reach. They also re­duced the need for a cum­ber­some kit bag.
