Back in the 1960s, Amer­i­can news or­gan­i­sa­tions could of­ten af­ford to send large teams of both war pho­tog­ra­phers and re­porters to Viet­nam (es­pe­cially once it be­came a hot-but­ton po­lit­i­cal is­sue). How­ever, dur­ing a fire­fight in the jun­gle it was easy to get sep­a­rated from the writer, so pho­tog­ra­phers had to be pre­pared to note down what they had seen.
