Of­ten cited as the first fe­male pho­tog­ra­pher, Anna Atkins cre­ated the first pho­to­graphic book to be com­mer­cially pub­lished. A botanist, she used the cyan­otype process to de­velop pho­tograms of al­gae and plants us­ing light-sen­si­tive pa­per – the method dyed the pa­per blue, hence the term ‘blue­print’. Atkins is said to have made at least 10,000 im­ages, tak­ing around ten years to cap­ture them all, and she pro­duced three vol­umes of her book in to­tal.
