External engine car

All About History - - AVIATION -

The Hindenburg’s four, 16-cylinder diesel engines were made by Daimlerbenz (which also made Mercedes cars). Driving the propellers, each one was stored in an external engine car, to which mechanics would have to access by stepping out into the open air with only a railing for protection – even in mid-flight! A mechanic was stationed in each engine car at all times to monitor the diesel and carry out engine orders transmitted from the control car.
