Chi­nese junks were us­ing rud­ders long be­fore they were im­ple­mented in Western ships. A rud­der was used to help steer the junk and pre­vented it from slip­ping side­ways in the wa­ter. Rud­ders were made from a large and heavy board, which at­tached to the back of the boat.
