Fol­low­ing her at­tempted as­sas­si­na­tion at the Grand Brighton Ho­tel, she es­caped in­jury, but a number of friends and col­leagues died or were in­jured. Un­de­terred, she still de­liv­ered her con­fer­ence speech the fol­low­ing day in a typ­i­cal act of de­fi­ance against ter­ror­ism. She would later sign the An­glo-ir­ish Agree­ment, which paved the way for the Good Fri­day Agree­ment. 1984
