Par­tic­i­pat­ing in some of the heav­i­est fight­ing of this de­ci­sive Amer­i­can vic­tory were the

10th Cavalry, a seg­re­gated African-amer­i­can reg­i­ment fa­mously known as the Buf­falo Sol­diers. One of their white of­fi­cers at San Juan Hill, John Per­sh­ing, would later be pro­moted to com­man­der of US forces in World War I.
