All About History - - SPAIN -

The Alhambra was originally a fortress built in 889, and defence remained important as it expanded over the centuries. The Alcazaba section once housed a small red castle but it was fortified with thick walls and three towers (Homenaje, Vela and Quebrada) by Muhammad I of Granada who made the Alhambra his residence. Soldiers would live in homes constructed within a courtyard and there was a bread-making oven too.
