Mata­dors are dressed by the sword ser­vant about an hour be­fore a fight, go­ing through a rit­ual only a priv­i­leged few can watch. Mata­dors fac­ing the bull alone in the third stage of a fight, wav­ing a red cape (muleta) to at­tract and wear out the bull be­fore us­ing the tem­pered steel sword (es­toque). Mule­tas were said to have been first used by Fran­cisco Romero in 1726.
