Rev­o­lu­tion and civil war had weak­ened Rus­sia’s grip over Fin­land and Ger­many tried to take ad­van­tage to fill the po­lit­i­cal vac­uum. Ger­man-backed ‘whites’ faced Rus­sian-backed ‘reds’, with the whites achiev­ing vic­tory. How­ever, with the de­feat of Ger­many in WWI its in­flu­ence di­min­ished and Fin­land was able to es­tab­lish it­self as an in­de­pen­dent na­tion.
