From its base in In­dia, Britain tried to keep the Bol­she­vik in­flu­ence in Afghanistan at bay. When the Afghan ruler de­clared in­de­pen­dence in 1919, con­flict fol­lowed. Afghan forces were weak, but Bri­tish forces were drained fol­low­ing WWI and the end re­sult was Afghanistan as an in­de­pen­dent coun­try.
