FIRESHIPS

-

Significantly outgunned, the English lauched six fireships against the Spanish fleet. These were a unique terror to early modern vessels which were made of wood, caulked with tar, and filled with gunpowder. Even the ropes were greased with fat making the bulk of the ship highly flammable. Fireships were usually steered by a skeleton crew who would abandon ship at the last minute.
