Air ace Joseph A Walker vaults from the cock­pit of the X1 with char­ac­ter­is­tic glee. Walker, who served in World War II, flew three vari­a­tions of the su­per­sonic Bell X-1 and be­came the first Amer­i­can to make space flight when the X-15 ex­ceeded 100 kilo­me­tres in alti­tude in 1963. Re­peat­ing the feat made him the first per­son to make mul­ti­ple space flights and he was also the first test pilot of the Lu­nar Land­ing
